You can easily create a bootable CD by creating a bootable
floppy and putting the files on a CD, or create one with
Roxio/Adaptec or Nero. I don't think an upgrade CD is
bootable. You can use an XP CD, or any other Windows OS (ME,
'98, etc.). When you boot of a CD, it doesn't install or do
anything without a lot a prompts.

I see you got the new combo drive in, and you still have the
problem. Is this still the case? If so, I am TOTALLY
bewildered on this. I saw someone mentioned you can't just
boot in the typical way from that restore DVD you have, so did
you look into the ways you're supposed to boot from it?

Hi Clint,
Well, we got the new combo drive from Gateway yesterday- same
model. My
husband installed it and it does exactly the same thing -
nothing! So,
my burner was ok, like I thought. I don't know what happened to
the
computer, but I DO know it happened after I did that update
from Roxio.
This drive is the same- CD part works and DVD part does not
work. Still
can't update the drivers. It's like we didn't even change it.
My husband is going to talk to the technician at his job and
see if he
can check the registry and see if something was changed in
there. I did
scan for viruses - the computer is fine. I use Norton, my files
are up
to date and I scan everything after I download it. I even
scanned the
computer for errors and it came up fine.
I agree with you about trying to fix the computer yourself. I
learned A
LOT on my own, but I'm no computer genius! I try to fix
whatever I can
by myself or with the help of you guys on my lists so I can
learn how
this thing works and know what to do in the future. If someone
else
fixes it, I have no idea what was wrong or how they fixed it.
I'll tell you one thing- I sure miss my Sony! I never had a
problem with
it. Next time I get a computer, it WON'T be a Gateway!
If there is anything else I can try before my husband takes
this to his
job, let me know. He has to talk to the tech first, so probably
won't be
taking it in until after Monday.
You mentioned trying to boot off of a bootable cd. I don't
think I have
one?
I DO have a Windows XP upgrade CD that I bought for my previous
computer
(the Sony came with ME) - can I try that? If so, I want to make
sure it
doesn't install anything- I don't want to screw this up anymore
than it
is. If they would just send me the [EMAIL PROTECTED] restore CD's I could
fix this
myself! LOL.
Thanks.
Lisa
