Clint, the new ani cursor patch was what broke the Realtek software. There really wasn't much of a choice but to install it. I posted a url for the hotfix for security update last night but it never came through to the list. I must have used some proscribed word. The hotfix installs a new version of HHCTRL.ocx. Works fine.
You are right. If windows update ever recommends hardware/driver updates, run away very very fast. That file is the Realtek HD Sound Effect manager in the control panel. I have the same problem. If you uninstall the patch the exe loads and the error message goes away. The sound works fine though so I'm just leaving the patch installed on mine. It fixes a pretty serious security flaw. Hopefully Realtek will update software soon.
