They are the same thing, David.  

MS only installs critical updates automatically, never hardware/driver
updates.  But I still have my updates set to tell me when updates are
available.  I never let MS install anything automatically.

Ben Moore posted a different link for the "patch for the patch." I used his
link, and it fixed the problem.

Is there any way of knowing whether this Microsoft hotfix is the same?

I assume that there is no reason to use this link as well as the other one.
If it ain't broke (any more,) don't hotfix it.
