Mac OSX comment:

I find that I get really huge PDFs when using Quark 6's Export to PDF
command on MacOSX. This uses a JAWS PDF engine (not Adobe Distiller), as I
understand it. Despite the size, it is pretty fast. I then usually open the
PDF in Acrobat 6 and use the Advanced/PDF Optimizer function to reduce the
file - usually to Acrobat 4 since that works well when imported back into
Quark 5 and 6. You can also use the File/Reduce File Size command but I
don't know how to customize its compression settings.

I find that the safest way to create industrial-strength PDFs still involves
printing to .ps (.prn) and using Distiller with specific job option
settings. I haven't found anything comparable to the Create Acrobat PDF
shortcut I used to use in Mac OS 9.2 but I will settle for anything that
works consistently.
