Hi This response may be a little late...been a long weekend here and much mail to get through.. I've seen the same behaviour by PDFs not created via Distiller. My machine (also Mac G4 in OS 9.2 with Q4.11) would hang up during quark preview of the PDF. Turning off the preview for that one placement does the trick. And yes, the beastly troublesome PDFs do take longer to appear in the pic box. Try it!
