Thanks for the info Leonard.

But for my uses (a product catalog) the images  don't need to be of superior
quality so if they appear okay when printed then I don't have an issue ....
famous last words 'cause I know that someone will complain.

        Keep in mind the GIF is a LOSSLESS compression algorithm and
file format with a maximum of 256 colors, while JPEG is an LOSSY
compression algorithm & file format designed for photographic images.

        That means that you will end up with REALLY BLURRY images if
you go this route...
