True, you may just read the gif headers to get the image information,
then wrap the rest as an lzw decode filter.  But for those who
actually decode the gif before embedding into a pdf, I would suggest
re-encoding using flate.  My understanding is that encoding lzw is
where the patent issues arise, not decoding.
