The numbers are relative to the amount of light entering.  A + always indicates more 
light, a - less light. Thus you'll get an equivalent of f 5.6, or a stop longer 
shutter time (like 1/125 instead of 1/250 s), if that's the way the camera deals with 
the compensation.
