Canon and Nikon are where they are because they gave a rats ass about users of more than 20 year old lenses.
Canon is where it is because they invest in R&D and come up with the right product & technology at the right time. The others try to imitate them with a 2-3 years lag (Nikon) or gave up altogether (Pentax).
