If the camera/lens combo is mounted with the rotational axis (thats where the camera meets the tripod) close to the same plane as the moving parts (shutter/ mirror), then there is no distance advantage for any vibration to operate on the camera system. Move the rotational axis away from that plane (like to a lens mount) and suddenly the rotation that the moving parts are trying to impart has some space to work with, and whammo!, more vibration problems. The only tripods I have found really good for taming vibration are made of wood. William Robb
