I think the triumph of VHS over Beta can be better explained by the
marketing of licences. VHS was essentially free to other manufactures,
Beta cost a bundle to license from SONY. Other manufactures built
inexpensive VHS machines which increased VHS' market share, Beta gets
squeezed out. (Didn't Pentax try do something like this with the K-mount).
