I agree with this. The best conditions photographically are usually the worst environmentally.

When I found a Pentax 15mm lens I kept my Tokina 17mm in case of harsh environments. The only times I've actually taken the 17 instead was when travelling light.

I do treat my gear carefully but that's mostly to avoid potential malfunction. Cosmetically I don't care.

I agree.

The best shot on my wall was taken in pouring rain, with the *istD and 18-55 DA. Luckily it proved more water resistant than advertised.
