Around your part of the world, professional photographers don't get paid by using their equipment? Don't depreciate their equipment based on business tax rules, etc? What do they get paid for? and how do they manage their business assets?

They also have to pay mortgages, car loans, buy food, power, water and natural gas for heat, and if they have kids, then all the expenses of raising children.
And probably a few other expenses as well.
I don't know any professional photographers whom I would classify as really well off, and none who can afford to completely junk a camera system and buy into another one.

The people who can afford to change entire equipment kits on a whim are usually professionals of a different stripe, such as doctors or lawyers.

No one said anything about "change entire equipment kits one a whim". I change my equipment when there appears to be a sound reason to do so, usually financial. I can choose to change equipment on a whim too, and might do so when I feel reasonably wealthy, but that's not the point of this discussion.

Your implication that you buy your equipment based on what you want at the moment implies a general willingness to do exactly the opposite.
