Funny, I was thinking that this was exactly where things were going if
you want to optimize registration distance for each lens. The
difference being that I was figuring that they'd do it first at the
high end of the market, optimizing a $2,000 body for a $15,000 lens.

I've been thinking for some time of a modular camera system allowing you to interchange the lenses, the sensors units and the viewfinders independently. A fast contrast-detect AF system (a la Panasonic) would solve any tolerance problem in positioning the interchangeable sensor units and the lenses.
