Yes, it was the missing letters that drew my attention to the current
state of the diner. The feeling of sadness that generated in turn led
me to notice the other run-down diner in the area (The Whitehouse
Diner) and to decide that I should do a series of photos featuring
these places and other active and abandoned diners in the area. If
and when the economy recovers, these places may disappear, and be
replaced by strip malls.

The "American Diner" seems a vanishing breed; that you have so many
in your area seems amazing. Your project to capture them while
they're still available is a brilliant idea.

I'm definitely getting inspired to go get some shots of diners myself. There's a rather scenic one across the street from B&H, which I suspect must be one of the most photographed restaurants in the world.

While I'm not a big fan of "breakfast food", except maybe a really good chicken fried steak, I do love a good diner. Maybe there are some to be recommended near where things are happening in Chicago.

I've been to a lot of diners on the west coast, and the ones I've been to on the drive to Texas (Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas ...) seem to be quite similar. On a trip to New York (white plains) a couple of years ago, I was quite taken by the new york diners. I was rather tickled to see both Matzoh ball soup and a cuban sandwich on the same menu. I didn't get to any diners in Chicago last year, so I'm not quite sure what Chicago diners are like.
