That depends.

If the film has been in cold storage and is not extremely out of date, there
shouldn't be a problem.  I recently shot a roll of Kodak Ektar 25 that had
been frozen since its expiration date in 1995 and for playing with the
Yashica 124 it was fine.  I've also shot a fair amount of B&W, cold stored
out of date and no problems with it either.  I've also got a couple of pro
packs of outdated Agfa Optima 200 on the way and will find out more about
outdated color film after I shoot some of that.

This being said, I don't know whether I would depend on outdated film for
serious photography.
