I hear what you say, but like many talented photographers here, you
sometimes forget that some of us are still in learning mode, although I am
pleased to say it's coming on line quickly:-)

I can risk "cheap" film in order to get my act together, as long as I don't
go mad.

I'm not as good as you Mike, at least give me until 2003:-)

NEVER buy out-of-date film, except maybe for studio still-life work, when
you can test it and shoot it at leisure--or when you buy it in bulk and test
it carefully before using it. Otherwise it's totally stupid, like trying to
use spoiled film developer and hoping for the best. We work and work to get
good pictures, and we're all aware that lightning strikes
intermittently--really great shots sometimes materialize at the most
unexpected times. Having questionable film in the camera when that happens
is...well, I don't want to get insulting.

People always ask me why I use powdered film developer and liquid print
developer. It's because you can only develop the film ONCE. When you make a
print, it's no problem to make another one if the developer is funky. But if
you screw up the film, you're probably cooked. So with the film, you need to
know when it was mixed and how it was stored, etc.

There are places where you can economize, and places where you shouldn't.
Film is one thing you shouldn't skimp on.
