that's exactly it; two hyphens is a standard (actually borrowed from Usenet) to denote a signature block; Dan combined top-posting with a signature line, which put the entire quoted material into the signature area; Ann's email client is trying to be efficient by stripping what it thinks are signatures when quoting for replies
