that's a display feature, it doesn't change the content of the emails; it works well on short threads, but it can make reading top-posted replies on even more frustrating on long threads

Gmail hides everything wich you can find in the previous e-mail.

Gmail does *not* hide quoted material on bottom-posted emails on the (sometimes correct) assumption that such replies selectively quote the foregoing material
