I would love to take a photo course sometime, but it will probably have to wait until I retire (which is likely a decade away).
In the meantime, I like to take photo walks, try new vantage points, and evaluate my images honestly. By that, I don't mean muttering "that's crap!", "that sucks!", and "maybe that sucks a little less", but rather trying to figure out why something works or doesn't work without making it a character judgement. Going shooting with others is a lot of fun, and very instructive; but consistent with the above, one has to realize that one's photos being different than one's companions' does not mean they're worse. Your companions have different ways of seeing that are going to seem fresh, while your own viewpoint is one you've been living with a long time. I also like getting constructive comments here. Unfortunately, some photos that I think work pretty well get no comments at all (such as my most recent one); and others get gratifying compliments without constructive criticism. On another photo forum I occasionally hang out on, someone posted "What are your pet peeves in photography that you see other photographers do?", and boy was there a lot of responses of people gleefully putting others down. My feeling is that all that crappy photographers do is make my photos seem that much better in comparison. What peeves me is when I'm shooting someplace with someone else, and they get much better photos than I do. What I think is a much more productive question to discuss, is what you are doing, or have you done, to improve your own photography? Are you practicing hand held shots at low shutter speeds? Taking test shots without using the light meter to get a feel for what light gives what exposures? Spending a month shooting with only one prime lens at a time?
