I'm very tempted to convert my library of raw files from PEF to DNG.

Larry, here is my setup, for whatever it is worth. Storage is a simple Unix box (some flavor of Fedora if I ain't mistaken) with gigabit network adapter. My main PC (whose configuration in terms of processing power is unimportant) has two network adapters - one (100 MB) for networking and another (1 GB) connects directly to the storage. All my RAW (PEF or DNG) files are on the storage while the catalog is on the main PC. The LR is set so that whenever it exits it prompts me to backup my catalog to the storage which I do every now and then according to taste. Another valid point here I think is that my main PC has SSD for its main disk, so it is pretty fast.

Presently I am at about 1/5th of your total volume or may be it is 1/6th. I am having about 0.8 TB of RAW files and about 1 GB big catalog.

As a matter of further precaution I backup my network drive to a portable HDD.

Boris
