Dave, While you get a full illumination when shooting directly (i.e. parallel to the lens) you also get harsher shadows (although not as harsh as using in camera flash - a la Point and shoots).
The Lumiquest I use is the Pocket Bouncer. You don't get the diffuse light that you would from a soft box but at the same time, you don't get the harshness of direct flash. It's sort of the best of both worlds IMHO. Compensate though with distance or aperture if you're shooting from a distance because any bouncer/box will reduce the range of the flash. For $40 CDN, you should be able to try out the Lumiquest, or for a bit cheaper, the Omni-bounce.
