Colorado National Monument is lovely - I happened to be near there in 2001 (driving out west in the fall on the way to the Grand Canyon for a Scrabble tourney). Was near there just about the time I needed to get
a campsite and there were wonderful late afternoon vistas... it's small
by western standards but really neat.

I've enjoyed (?) the Trail Ridge Road drive which exceeds 12,00 feet
in elevation in some areas and constitutes the longest high elevation
drive in the US. In order to make this claim, it also includes a bit
of Estes Park.
Can keep one focused.

the claim i'm more familiar with is "highest continuous paved road" — it
connects Grand Lake to Estes Park - there aren't many guard rails, but
it is well maintained and traffic is not fast, so i find tourists (on
foot & driving) the biggest hazard in good conditions; interestingly,
this 12000 foot pass was the only one of three roads into Estes Park
that wasn't closed by September's catastrophic floods

Trail Ridge is a gorgeous drive and when combined with Rocky Mountain
National Park and Estes Park is perhaps the most well-rounded outdoor
destination in Colorado; but if you want a Colorado "sports car" drive i
would recommend Colorado National Monument, an underrated area almost on
the order of Canyonlands with a great through-road along the canyon edges
