Absolutely correct Rob. I do an enormous amount of high-end geospatial data
analysis using various GIS packages. If you have a high-end PC running W2K
SP2 and good components, it will stay afloat for months on end. I have been
running now almost constantly for the last six months. The only
interruptions have been power blackouts. Bare in mind that the work I do
sometimes requires that the PC run for a full 24 hours just to perform one
calculation or analysis. Perhaps Linux would do as well or even better at
this, but the software I use is not available for Linux.

I do, however, sympathise with those still trying to run 95/98/ME on P2 or
P3 machines. Once you get the kernel stable, using all available patches and
plugs it will run OK, but doesn't take a lot to kill. I'm lucky I guess, as
I am running an Athlon T/Bird 1.8ghz with 1024mb of RAM, 2x80gb hdd and a
128mb graphics card. There's other stuff in it of course, but DVD's aren't
exactly work related...oops.

In a nutshell, computers are always horse for courses. The whole Mac-vs-PC
debate is now so pass as to be boring. We have all argued around the same
point for eons. The platforms do different things better than each other.
Graphic design for instance has been the bastion of Mac's forever.

If you want a Mac..Buy one. But be prepared for really expensive equipment
and a lack of software support if you want to do anything more than general
office related stuff or graphic design/image stuff. If you want a PC...buy
one. But be prepared to go top end, and don't settle for mediocre. You can
get a stompingly fast PC for less the price of a G4 case (althought the G4
does look s*#t hot in that sexy chromed case.....)

Cheers

Shaun.

Dude,

Chill. I've been snuggled in PC/Mac environs for years and I can tell
you that
a well spec'd well built PC using premium components will stay upright
under
heavy loads for far longer than any Mac given the same load. I have
the logs to
prove it. WK2 SP2 is very stable indeed, so much so it's scary :-)
