Do you give the math student the numbers or does he have to guess at what he

It also depends on what aperture is selected.  If you don't know the aperture 
you can't calculate the DOF.

I never said they needed a preview.  Just the aperture information to 
estimate/calculate/judge DOF.

Exactly.  I'm not looking for automation.  Just information without moving 
the camera from my eye.  I can use whatever f-stop and shutter speed I want.  
I just want to know what it is without moving the camera.

I've been using SLR's since 1983 and prefer a manual camera as well.  That's 
why I own 3 MXs and rarely use the LX in aperture priority mode.

Again, the MX has no automatic features it is fully manual and mechanical.  
It just provides viewfinder information.  That's all I'm looking for.
