Hi All,
> 1. Don't buy before SP3
You might be waiting a long time, as SP's have really
been replaced by web updates that Altium plans to have
online every month or two. There have been some for
AD6 already.
A web update looks like an SP, it sounds like an SP, so it might be an SP.
The difference now is that there might be an SP103. The fact that there have
been some already tells me something. Though, this is a much better way and
it works well for me with other SW.
> 2. Don't buy maintenance (What additional services they offer
> to justify this expense?)
The information I was emailed, was, that the upgrade included
a free 12 months software assurance. So its not a extra charge.
All SP's are free forever, even after 12 months, its other items
like upgrades and the type of support that change.
And after 12 months? In some fast calculations, maintenance costs in total
as much as a straight upgrade if not more, but with maintenance you lock
yourself up into a contract. Suits some people, does not suit others.
Personally, I don't see a value. Are there any people on maintenance? Have
they had to pay to upgrade to AD6. My understanding of it is that they
wouldn't have to.
> 3. Return of bugs
Can't say I've seen many, maybe there are some, none that are
show stoppers.
> 4. Loss of features
Again, I'm can't think of any features lost in AD6 from SP4.
Bugs and features, sorry, I still can't get over the chage from P99 to DXP.
E.g. change from 5 decimal points precision to 3 decimal points precision.
For work in metric system this is significant and created a couple of
problems for me. And as said in my first email, I am still to get the AD6
demo CD.

Agree, this shouldn't take more then a week, get on there
case.

This is not limited to Altium products, we as a whole pay
much more for most software in Australia, AutoCAD, Corel,
Microsoft, Alibre and most others cost more here, sometimes
100% more then in the USA.
I just checked the price for AutoCAD LT upgrade, here $666
USD and in the USA $339, close to double.
I am talking about what people in Australia pay compared to some other
people in Australia. And same thing happens elsewhere, as was mentioned on
the forum.
> I am sure there will be a value for money in it after SP3.
AD6 seems to be in good shape now, any small issues are way
less then the features that have been gained. AD6 from SP4
was really a small change, in that unlike the past, the core
operation hasn't been changed. The first versions in years
gone by have been shockers, I still have a list in my Protel
file from the version 3 release, many pages long.
Today I read a quote about experience: it is the ability to recognise your
mistakes when you do them again. That makes me experienced Protel buyer.
Still like it, though, as I know it will become good after couple of SPs.
The main reason is that it is still intuitive. Maybe a bit less intuitive
than before.

Regards,
Igor
