John,

I have a child. Admittedly, with mine it was a hospital alarm that made far 
more noise. But still, I know the sound of a baby at birth and the behavior of 
a newborn in its first year. 

But why couldn't Peirce have written the passage, if he had witnessed it too?  
I have no clue.
