They are common enough in ex British colonies yes, but the claim here is that 
the Libyans used Soviet ammunition and rifles, and hence weapons liberated from 
local army stores would have been AK47 etc.
Africa is a big place, the question is how did the weapons get to Benghazi? Via 
the Egyptian army?

Early days, indeed. Obviously the fiends have been seeding the entire
continent with those FN-FAL rifles for 60 years.
