The meanings of liberal and conservative change over time. Liberals were advocates of markets, while conservatives tended to represent the landed gentry, who were very careful about the consequences of capitalism. Because the progressive movement had supported World War I, Roosevelt adopted the term liberal, which did not even appear in the New York Times index before 1922. As Carrol observed, for many of us here, liberal does not have a favorable connotation because it represents a policy orientation that packages conservative policies in a more appealing fashion.
I suppose you could write books about whether liberals nor conservatives are better lovers, actors, athletes, or even economics professors. -- Michael Perelman Economics Department California State University Chico, CA 95929 530 898 5321 fax 530 898 5901 http://michaelperelman.wordpress.com _______________________________________________ pen-l mailing list [email protected] https://lists.csuchico.edu/mailman/listinfo/pen-l
