Pope, a conservative, identified "Virtue" with the politics of the Rural
Gentry, "Vice" with The City -- i.e. financial interests. At this point
commerce is not seen as necessarily capitalist. And of course Brenner, in
Merchants and Rebels, distinguioshes between capitalist & non-capitalist
commerce: the East India Company he sees as non-capitalist. I was only half
through that book when my eyes collapsed, & I can't remember details.

The meanings of liberal and conservative change over time. Liberals
were advocates of markets, while conservatives tended to represent the
landed gentry, who were very careful about the consequences of
capitalism. Because the progressive movement had supported World War
I, Roosevelt adopted the term liberal, which did not even appear in
the New York Times index before 1922. As Carrol observed, for many of
us here, liberal does not have a favorable connotation because it
represents a policy orientation that packages conservative policies in
a more appealing fashion.

I suppose you could write books about whether liberals nor
conservatives are better lovers, actors, athletes, or even economics
professors.
