Hi Chris, PDL folks:
In an effort to gauge the progess of PDL development in functionality
and usability, I would invite you to reply to me or to list with a quick
message about your PDL use:
- How long have you used PDL?
Since 1999 or earlier.
- What PDL version do you use?
2.4.11 currently.
- Best thing(s) about PDL
You can write in perl (with all it's CPAN goodness). It's fast. It adds
another programming paradigm that is well suited to many problems.
Slicing and threading capabilities allow crazy elegant code in many cases,
like the 5 line 'Game of Life' from the Threading tutorial:
http://pdl.perl.org/?docs=Threading&title=PDL::Threading#example__conway_s_game_of_life
- Worst thing(s) about PDL
Can be obscure. NiceSlice, as nice as it is, does not play nicely with a
debugger since it uses source code filtering (although I think I'm a bit
behind on this--pdl2 shell does this better?). Also, I've heard nice
things about Prima, but I'm not satisfied with the slowness of developing
plots with my own PDL::Graphics::PLplot and I suspect the GNUplot module
is not much quicker. A better 'workbench' type of plotting package in
which you can explore data and develop algorithms quickly would be nice.
I need to try out Prima...
- I would use PDL more (or at all) if only ...
I already use PDL whenever I can!
- Any suggestions for PDL development?
Make it easier to install and start using.
The goal is to improve the PDL experience and to encourage a
broader PDL user community.
Thanks much for all your hard work!
Thanks much,
Chris Marshall (PDL-2.007 release manager)
