Hello,

At the National Library of Scotland, we have a quarantine space which doubles
up as a disaster store, it’s hardly ideal but I think allocating space in
acquired properties can be tricky. I’ve found that it can sometimes be
difficult to state your case for fit for purpose quarantine spaces, as space
can often be an issue in museums/libraries/galleries, which always need room
for the expansion of collections, and in some cases it really can be a matter
of making the best of what you have. In regards to the freezers, if you’re not
using them too often, or don’t need to freeze a large volume of material,
Foster Refrigeration have some good offers on freezers which you might be
interested in.

Let me know how you get on, as quarantine is something we are currently
reviewing at the library, and any experiences people might have would be
interesting.

Best

Hello Amy,

I am so happy that you have sent out this question as our institution is
currently in the midst of the same process as you are. We are however planning
to use our freezer on a daily basis, as we treat all incoming archival material
as a routine measure against the grey silverfish (ctenolepisma longicaudata)
that has now become common all over Norway.

So – I also anticipating the flow of answers and recommendations! ☺

Hello Everyone,

We are in the process of setting up a quarantine facility on site, and I would
be grateful if people were willing to share their experiences of the same. What
were the pitfalls? What would you have done differently? What is essential? I
am also interested in purchasing a freezer – we are unlikely to use it on a
regular basis though. Would anyone have a product or manufacturer that they
would recommend.

Thanks in anticipation,

Amy.
