I used to have an el-cheapo CS4232-based sound card, and I got it to
work by using the CS4232 support in the kernel. Sound was fine, and I
know recording was fine because I once used a program like gstring to
tune my guitar with it. Are you *sure* the IRQ and DMA settings for the
card are absolutely right? I had to set things up so that what Windoze
reported for my sound card settings were the same as what the Linux
kernel used. Try experimenting with the isapnp tools as well (I never
had the benefits of this utility because I swapped sound cards with my
best friend years ago, and now use an original SB16. I remember I was
still using Slackware 3.1 with a kernel 2.0.9...).
Another possibility (unlikely, but unfortunate if true) is your sound
card is based on the CS4232 chipset but uses a non-standard ADC. In
this case, you'll never get the mic to work unless someone hacks the
kernel again (and if it's an el cheapo soundcard like mine was, specs
will be hard to come by...).
