Just remembered. Certain mics (notably electrets) require a +200mV bias on
the mic input to power them. If you have one of these mics, and the sound
card does not provide the bias (the only one I know of that has an
explicit bias control is the Ensoniq AudioPCI) then the mic output will be
very very weak and you won't hear it. This will make you think that the
mic is not working.
If the mic works in Windoze, the Windoze driver may be turning on the bias
(as I said the AudioPCI has a mixer control to turn the bias on and off)
but Linux is unaware of it.
