The way I see it, there's no disputing that Android (the OS) is free. You
can get the source and  build your own, if you want to.

Android, as an overall platform (the hardware and the total experience),
depends heavily on the manufacturers. And I haven't even read anything from,
say HTC, that "lulls" you into the kind of total ownership that you
describe, where you can do anything to your device. When you get an HTC
Android phone, you're getting HTC's Android -- it's now HTC, no longer
original Android. So I think it's safe to say that they have the right to
void your warranty with them if you tamper with their product. That's how it
is when _open_ stuff is re-released _branded_.
