Thanks to all those who gave tips. My setup now works.

My remote users use IP on same subnet as my server's
ethernet port. My earlier problem was due to not
placing proxyarp (yes, despite being there in my
notes) in the options file, thus no host route was
made to the remote client. Once again, thanks!
