If you get an IDE RAID controller (like 3ware's, which I use and have been very happy with) then you can use an IDE hard drive (note: Maxtor and Seagate make SCSI drives too). If you get a SCSI RAID controller then you use SCSI hard drives. You can't interchange the two (eg: IDE drives won't work with a SCSI controller and vise versa). As far as IDE RAID is concerned, 3ware gives you true hardware RAID, has fully open-sourced drivers for the Linux kernel, and has free GNU/Linux tools for web-based administration and monitoring of the controller.
