hi

if i may jump in with a question--i've always wondered
about this, since I do not have any hardware raid
equipment (I just use software raid):

Do the hardware controllers write data in a proprietary
format, or do they write data in a "normal" fashion, so
that when you pull out the disk you'd be able to read
it without the controller? I've often wondered if you
need the same exact hardware controller to read the
disk, for example if the controller breaks down?

TIA,

jondz
