On Monday, Microsoft released some of its code under an open-source license, and posted it on SourceForge, the open-source code repository.

To date, Microsoft has made its source code available under a
variety of licensing mechanisms, all under its "shared source"
umbrella. But until today, the company had not released code
under what is commonly considered a true open-source license.

purely a business tactic.

m$ has been expanding to other areas of techno lately. (eg. x-box, handhelds, etc.)

if it sells, they want to have their hands on it.

people should not look into at as a change of company philosophy but as subtle move to balance their image and gain some lost trust (and profit).

you might one day wake up and find m$-mcdo happy meals with little billy inside.
