Disconnected. The way the batter mounts in the case requires it to be removed in order to get at the + terminal anyway. And that also means removing the - terminal, because it comes off when you pull the battery out.
Did you change the load on the UPS?
Not at first.
Does removing some load from the UPS allow it to work?
My last test, after "cleaning" the terminals was with the UPS on the desk with nothing plugged in to it. So no, removing some load had no effect.
