I think combining the settings woudn't help simplify the main UI much as
they are already hidden under the 3 dots menu. It would effectively bury
options under yet another layer.

Has Skin / UI / Material Settings been considered as a way of
differentiation? I must admit I've been confused by what plain
"Settings" contains.

I agree that the Material functionality seems a lot more than a skin but
"skin" is at least a term in relatively common usage, so most folks
understand it's shorthand for UI Look and Feel.

I appreciate it is difficult with so many different elements spread over
different places and with different sources. And that those elements
have changed from being purely hardware to both h/w and software.
I know for folks who are "embedded" with apps that things seem obvious
as the navigation of the ecosystem goes into longer-term memory, but for
occasional users without that knowledge it is harder having to think
your way through where to go to change various settings.
This is why the Settings search box in Windows and Android is a
life-saver. Not sure if such a thing would be possible (or even help)
here.
