Brine,
Am I reading this correctly?  Your taxes are based on your $60K house and your
actual land property isn't assessed?
In CA, property is only reassessed when there are changes - up for an
additional room (permits tell the tale) or down when property values (requested
reassessment) take a dive.  My former Los Angeles house was originally assessed
based on $115K purchase price.  Taxes totaled around $1400 per year.  Ten years
later the house was "valued" at $505K.  After 20 years, my taxes were only
$1800.  If it wasn't for Prop 13, I couldn't have kept it if there were
reassessed values every few years.
Now I live in Riverside county.  This small house (and property) was only $145K
and my total taxes are $2300/year.  That includes about $800 of nickel and dime
BS added for mosquito control (3" rain annually), grade schools, flood control
(still only 3" rain annually), high schools, roads, colleges, library, and
vaguely named items that I don't understand.
On a balancing side, our car registration here is based on value.  If I
remember correctly, NJ was three levels and mine was $15 per year back then.
NY registration was based on the weight of the vehicle.
I'm glad I left Bergen county back in '72!

The building is assessed at $60K the land is not part on the NJ property tax
deal ... when I bought my house in 1994, taxes were $2.4k  the system that
funds the school system makes sure that my taxes will ALWAYS go up!!!

Is that the market  or assessed value? Do you mean $600,000?
Because $8,000.00 is over 10%of the value of your house. My god

My taxes are based on the fact that my house is worth $60K ... I am afraid of
the day they reassess my taxes!!! My co-worker had to sell his house and find a
house in a smaller tax zone after he went up to $14K ... don't forget NJ has
close to 600 school districts with various staff and what not making over $100K
... the problem started way before the current Governor!!!

Your property taxes are *only* $8K per year? You'd have to live in a house
assessed at $800K to pay that much here.

You don't have to convince me that Christie's term as governor there has been
disastrous, or that he's a liberal in sheep's clothing. He was the one person
who, if named as VP, I'd have likely just left the box for POTUS blank on
election day. I really can't stand him. Such a blowhard.

I remember in one of the debates (before his horrible poll results knocked him
down to the lower tier debate), Carly Fiorina and Donald Trump were touting
their records and accomplishments in business (something few Americans knew
about either of them). Christie blustered into the conversation, scolding them
both with, "for the 55-year-old construction worker out in that audience
tonight who doesn't have a job, who can't fund his child's education — I gotta
tell you the truth — they could care less about your careers." Then he
proceeded to spend more time than anyone on the stage touting his cherry-picked
record in NJ over and over again - as if that somehow helps a 55-year old
construction worker.

He is seriously the most loudmouthed, obnoxious - and of course fat-assed -
politician I've ever seen.

I live in NJ and we have "charter schools" and "Abbot districts" which are in
poor sections and they get much more money to teach and it proves that throwing
money at the problem isn't the answer ... Johnny still can't read!!! Governor
Christie has pissed off a lot of folk with his concept of "fair funding" for
school districts ... same money per student in all districts!!! As a person who
never had a child and went to Catholic Schools until the 9th grade, I had a
better education because of my parents; I am tired of my property taxes being
sent to Trenton and not coming back to my town, but going to "poor
districts"!!! 75% of my property taxes go to the school system, I am in a town
that is fairly affordable, my property taxes are only $8K a year ... NJ has put
in the lottery, gambling and raised the sales tax to give us property tax
relief and every year my taxes go up ... something ain't right!!!

I live in a conservative state where poor and working class kids living in
horrible public school districts can obtain a voucher and attend the private
school of their choice. The program grows every year and currently has over 32K
kids taking advantage of this opportunity. I expect doing so will pay off
nicely within a few years.

The Divisiveness Between OurPolice and Our Citizens

“There are no words to describe the atrocity that occurred to our city. All I
know is that this must stop, this divisiveness between our policeand our
citizens.”
--Dallas Police Chief David Brown, in the wake of the recent shooting of
fivepolice officers and several others

Mr. Brown, most (but not all) of the causes behind the divisiveness aredue to
decisions made by individuals well above your pay grade.

I offer a few simple actions that can be taken immediately in bothWashington DC
and in every state capital around the country – theseactions will have
immediate beneficial effect toward ending the“divisiveness between our police
and our citizens.”

1)      Eliminate all laws regarding victimlesscrimes – including, and
especially, drug laws
2)      Eliminate minimum wage laws
3)      End civil asset forfeiture

As soon as these are ended, several benefits will be immediatelyrealized: the
number of negative interactions between police and citizenswill be
overwhelmingly reduced; more fathers will be free of prison, available to tend
to their families; low-skilled and unskilledindividuals can work legally;
police will have far less incentive to stopand search the citizens.

I could write more – end the subsidies for fatherless families and endpublic
education, for example.  However these are much morecomplex.  The above items
can be ended tomorrow withoutconcern.

Of course, that we live in a society whereit is legal for government employees
to commit crimes contributes tothis divisiveness.  It is also true that
residents of high-crimeneighborhoodscan and should take matters into their own
hands.

But if we don’t want to continue on this certain slide toward
ever-moredivisiveness, enacting the above-listed items will go a long way.
Police and citizens are fighting an uphill and losing battle as long asmeasures
such as the above remain in place.

Tonight (July 14)Obama will hold a town hall on the topic of race relations,
justice, policing and equality.  Let’s see if he is truly interested inimproving
race relations, justice, policing and equality or if he isinterested in
doubling-down on the status quo.

Sadly, I know the answer already.
