I have no desire to move south
---
excellent news!!!

Well its been three years since I have moved to the sleepy little town in
east wake county from Western NY. In this time I have made several
observations about "southern living" that I must publish in order to help
"yankees" (as we are so affectionately called) decide whether or not the
"big move" is such a good idea.

*- Southern Hospitality:* This is probably the one that will be most
difficult to adjust to. Once you meet people in the neighborhood they will
begin to drop by unannounced. It will start sporadically until it reaches a
point when they stop by like clockwork. Most of the time they won't even
have a reason they will just say: "whatch y'all doin...." and stare at you
with there mouths open.

Pros: If you like people, then this would probably work for you.
Cons: If you don't like being bothered by people, then this will drive you
insane.

*-Southern Manners:* Ah yes the most promoted facet
<http://www.city-data.com/knowledge/Facet.html> of southern living. While
you might get a "yes sir" or "yes ma'am" now and then, that is where it
ends. A typical southern gentleman
<http://www.city-data.com/knowledge/Culture_of_honor__Southern_United_States_.html>
 will
not hold the door for you, will not wave you out into traffic, will not move
out <http://www.city-data.com/knowledge/Situation__song_.html> of your way
in the isle of the store, and may in fact spit on the ground in front of
you. These have all happened to me.

Pros: You can easily set the tone with the woman at the DMV by saying "yes
ma'am"
Cons: Its very superficial and you can see right through it.

*- Southern Personalities:* What you see is what you get. The people are
very one-dimensional. If you question anyone, then you have "insulted"
them. There is no integrity here. OBTW, they don't like yankees. The war is
still going on. They say its not, but it is..... oh yes it is.

Pros & Cons: See above.......

*- Southern Weather:* Forget about it. The summers are exhausting. Southern
people are stereotyped as being lazy, but the plain simple truth is that
its just too darn hot to do anything here from May through September. The
winters are cold so the actual window of good weather is smaller than that
of most northern cities.

Pros: If you like hot weather, then you will like this.
Cons: AC bill requires second mortgage.

To all those yankees thinking about moving south, please reconsider. Its
really not that bad where you are. Or maybe what I have described here
works for you.
