I'm curious what everyone's opinion is who has posted in this thread, but most especially Pittalum's opinion; (And I will admit that your posts Pittalum have got me to thinking!);
What is your "Opinion/Perspective/Observations" of the Teacher's Union? Do you see this organization as a positive influence that benefits not only the teachers but also the students? If the answer is "No"; then do you see any way to modify the organization where it would still allow the purpose of the union; (e.g.; Collective Bargaining); but limit the organization to where the purpose of schools is more well served?
