We only have a State sales tax, which is 7% but less u=in "Urban Economic Zones" ... failing cities like Newark and Camden ... When they put in the sales tax, while I was living in NY, it was supposed to help pay for schools and lower property taxes, just like the lottery and Casino gambling ... somehow they have always fallen short of the amazing savings we would get for paying more!!! I have lived in my house for 22 years now ...property taxes have gone up 400% in that time ... amazingly enough, my town is one of the least expensive to live in based on property taxes ... a co-worker of mine had to sell his house and move to a different town because they upped his taxes to $15K and could not afford to live there anymore!!!
