I should say that even the mediocre Catholic ones were far better than the public ones in most surrounding counties, including the one where I live.
I live in a county just outside the county Indianapolis is in (Marion). On the street I live on, when my kids were in grade and middle school there were a lot of kids here. At the time more than 30% of them were in private schools in Indianapolis. That's how bad the schools were here; they offered nothing for higher-achieving kids; it was a race to mediocrity. One of the dumbest asses I've ever met was superintendent over the schools; he blamed their horrific performance on poor kids moving here from Indianapolis - and showed me numbers showing how their test scores went down with migration into the school district. So I asked him if he'd ever tracked how many kids migrated OUT of his school district, or if he noticed they were almost exclusively the top students. He said he'd have to look at that, lol. Idiot.
