Yes, profit IS the problem. For one thing the American auto makers made ,advertised and pushed the trucks and SUV's due to the high profit per unit in them. Then the gas crunch hit and their sales went to hell. They did not have reliable, fuel efficiant cars with a reputation for high re-sale vaule to replace the sales they lost when people decided they no longer wanted gas-guzzlers. The obvious happened. Now they want the govt, to reward them for their lack of vison and competence.
