Because the market for these securities rendered them worthless,
despite their underlying worth. No one would buy mortgage backed
securities because they feared they didn't know the downside risk. And
they were right. They didn't. But they aren't even close to worthless.
In fact, they are securities backed by actual, tangible property.  And
as sucky as it seems now, real estate ALWAYS appreciates over the long
term.

Sales are not the problem for the US auto industry. PROFIT is the
problem. Only recently did gas milage kick the auto industry in the
ass and now that that non-problem has subsided, their problem still
exists. Why? Because their problem isn't gas milage but the cost of
producing their product. Look, I'm not anti labor or anti union. I
think these guys should get their fair share. But if your "fair share"
kills the company you work for you might re-consider your opinion.
This is just reality, dude. I think that auto workers are the salt of
the Earth. I think their unions have done them a dis-service.
