"Bailing out" banks and other entities with mortgage backed securities
is actually a good investment for the government because 90% of the
loans in these securities are performing just fine. The devaluation of
these securities was based on panic. The auto industry, on the other
hand, is operating on a failed business model. Giving them money will
only delay the inevitable collapse. Every rational person knew that
there would come a day when their concessions to their unions would
render them insolvent. Welcome to the day.
