I wonder how these Southern Christians would feel about having statues of the Virgin Mary, in the halls, and the children saying the Rosary, during recess. In the final analysis, it is the parents who are responsible for the ethical education of their children...not the community. If the parents do it well, the children might rebel in early adulthood, but many will return when their children begin to arrive. In the meantime, forcing one faith on all, or even just forcing the children to declare themselves is unfair. If some children choose not to attend religious classes...they need not be singled out for potential abuse. What would make much more sense is if the faith communities were to accept their responsibility for the moral education of the children. At the last time I checked, school finished for the day at 3:00pm, and there was no school on Saturday or Sunday. If an arrangement for academic credit were made with the boards of education, it might interest many children. It might be possible that some children would do the learning in more that one religious institution, and on their own. Then they would draw their own conclusions, and ..... would that be a bad thing?
